Broken Vows Second Chances by Gwen Hayes By Gwen Hayes Chapter 9

Chapter 9

This question made the maid’s face turn pale. “Mr. Hart, the report has been got rid of.”

Max frowned.

“What did you say?”

The maid was so frightened by his gloomy aura that she was about to cry, so she could only explain in a panic, “I’m sorry, Mr. Hart. I didn’t throw it on purpose, but the report was already rotten, and I didn’t think much about it at the time.”

She didn’t have the desire to explore the things thrown by the Hart family.

Moreover, Max often shredded some documents of company secrets. She was just a person who relied on this job for money to live a peaceful life, so she didn’t think much about it that day.

Until these two days when she started to prepare the herbal tea, she thought it was the special tea for Mrs. Hart’s illness, but she didn’t expect it to be antipyretics.

Her words made Max frown.

He knew Elizabeth didn’t look right.

In such heavy rain, even if she gave the umbrella to someone else, she could find a place to hide from the rain and call the driver to pick her up, or she could go home after the rain stopped.

Why did she have to come back in the rain?

Lincoln said worriedly, “Mr. Hart, is there something wrong with Mrs. Hart?”

Max handed him the car keys and coat. “I’ll go upstairs.”

Lincoln quickly took the things over.

After the maid left, Elizabeth was planning to rest for a while, but she received a call.

It was the deputy general secretary of the Lambert Group who called and discussed with her the project at

hand recently.

Because she was not in the company all day yesterday, no one had taken over this matter for the time being.

After hanging up the phone, Elizabeth stretched out her hand and rubbed her brows.

There were a lot of projects going on in the company recently. She missed one day at work, and things started to pile up.

It seemed that she had to go back to work today.

Elizabeth took out her laptop and logged into the mailbox when she heard footsteps outside the door.

She thought it was a maid, so she ignored it, clicked on the email, and prepared to deal with the work.

Until the footsteps stopped beside her, and a faint breath came.

Only then did Elizabeth realize something was wrong and raise her head.

With just one glance, she met Max’s dark eyes.

Seeing him suddenly, Elizabeth was startled. “Why are you here?”

Max pursed his thin lips slightly.

“This is my room.”

His tone was not good, and it was cold.

Elizabeth was slightly stunned and asked subconsciously. “Did someone bully you outside? Your tone is so

bad.”

“Who can bully me?” Max frowned. Why was this question so inexplicable? Where could he get bullied early in

the morning?

But he suddenly thought of something, so he paused, and after a moment of silence, he didn’t know what

kind of mood he had when he said, “I was at home last night.”

Sure enough, an unexpected expression appeared on Elizabeth’s face.

Max stared at her, “Are you surprised? Didn’t you know I was lying next to you last night?”

Elizabeth pursed her lips but did not answer.

It turned out that it was not an illusion to feel the sinking beside her in the middle of the night.

She fell asleep in a daze, and when she woke up, she felt that his place was cold, so she thought he didn’t

come back all night..

After learning that he was at home, Elizabeth’s mood became a little more delicate.

“I thought you didn’t come back.”

In a word, the two fell into silence.

Becky had only been back for two days, and the relationship between the two of them had become so

awkward that they were like strangers.

No one talked about that awkward topic.

It seemed that the two had avoided it tacitly. Probably only they knew why they would do this.

After a long time, Max suddenly asked, “Why don’t you take the tea?”

Why was this problem again?

Elizabeth turned to the laptop, stared at the screen as if nothing had happened, and explained lightly, “Yesterday I didn’t want to drink it, but today I feel much better, so I don’t need to drink it.”

Her calm appearance made Max twitch his lips. “Really? What was that hospital report?”

The hand that was originally scrolling the mouse stopped suddenly after hearing the word report.

Elizabeth almost thought that she had heard it wrong.

But the sound of his breathing close at hand told her that he had said this clearly just now.

Max saw it.

When he said the report, her fingers stopped suddenly for a moment.

It was also this movement that made him squint his eyes.

She had something to hide from him.

After a while, Elizabeth seemed to have sorted out her emotions and raised her head to look at him with

doubts hidden in her beautiful eyes.

A

“What report?”

Max looked at her without saying a word.

She acted very well. Whether it was her eyes, her expression, or her tone of voice, they were all normal, just

like how she usually spoke.

If Max hadn’t seen her movement in advance, he might have been tricked by her.

He stared at her, and his eyes were as sharp as a blade. “I’m asking you. What was that report?”

Hearing this, Elizabeth seemed to be taken aback. “It’s true that you are asking me, but I don’t know what report you are talking about?”

At first, Elizabeth was really startled by the report he mentioned.

She even thought if he had seen that report.

Did he know she was pregnant?

But soon, Elizabeth calmed down again.

Since the Blaine family went bankrupt, she had grown from a pampered rich girl to the current Secretary

Blaine, whom everyone respected.

The bosses of the companies that cooperated with the Hart Group would greet her politely when they saw

her.

This was not only because she was Max’s wife but also because they recognized her ability.

These two years of training and experience had transformed her into another person.

She was no longer the littie girl who panicked and freaked out when things happened.

Not to mention that she had torn up the report card.

Scanned with OKEN Scanner

Even if it wasn’t torn, the handwriting on it was washed away by the heavy rain, and the paper was rotten.

So even if he found it, he couldn’t see anything.

After the analysis, Elizabeth completely calmed down.

The corners of Max’s lips curled up slightly.

He sat down in front of her, and the two looked at each other.

The two were childhood friends, and they had known each other for so many years. So how could Max not know about her changes in the past two years?

When he asked her to come to the company at the beginning, Max had the same idea, hoping that she could grow up and be able to stand alone.

In the past two years, she had indeed done it.

She was a perfect right-hand.

She could speak calmly in a meeting with hundreds of people, let alone in front of Max.

Thinking of this, Max narrowed his eyes.

“You don’t know? Do you think I don’t know you?”

Elizabeth met his eyes fearlessly.

“Really? Do you know me well?”

In the next second, his arms came up and clasped the back of her neck. Then, his forehead was also close, and the fiery breaths of the two were intertwined.

A sentence squeezed out from between Max’s teeth.

“We have known each other for more than 20 years, and we have slept together in the same bed for two years. Elizabeth, if I don’t know you, who knows you?”

Elizabeth was stunned.

So they had known each other for so many years?

He claimed to know her, but he never knew that she liked him.
