Chapter 24

Here she went again.

Becky used the same sentence.

Elizabeth used to think that Becky was gentle and kind because the latter appeared

elegant and decent in public.

But Becky said similar words twice within several days after returning from abroad.

Last time Becky talked about Max, and this time it was about the domestic workers.

Becky seemed to thank Elizabeth, but in fact, she was declaring sovereignty to the

However, Becky owned neither of them.

Her words would have made sense if Becky had been Max’s girlfriend.

But Becky used not to be Max’s girlfriend, so Elizabeth failed to understand why Becky

said these words to her.

Moreover, if Becky had been Max’s girlfriend, Elizabeth would have agreed to Max’s proposal of fake marriage no matter how much she liked him.

However, Becky had helped her.

Therefore, Elizabeth pressed her lips and tolerated it. After ignoring the discomfort in her chest, she smiled faintly and said nothing.

Elizabeth’s calm indifference defeated Becky, who felt frustrated as if she had punched a

cotton ball.

But Becky knew she couldn’t delay any longer, so she said with a smile, “Shall we go to the small garden and talk?”

Becky was frightened by Elizabeth’s indifference shown to her friend, so she added in a subdued voice, “There are so many people here, and it’s not a good place to talk.”

Elizabeth nodded.

She got up and walked outside.

If possible, Elizabeth really didn’t want to talk to Becky.

But she owed Becky a favor and had to return it.

In the small garden.

Elizabeth led Becky to a quiet place where no one else was around.

Becky looked around and finally relaxed. There should be no problem talking here.

However, she was a little worried.

“No one is eavesdropping here, right?”

Elizabeth paused for a moment and then shook her head. “The servants seldom come here, and the gardener usually comes in the morning to water, trim, and grow the plants.”

It was almost noon.

“That’s good.”

Becky breathed a sigh of relief and then smiled kindly at Elizabeth.

Afterward, she took an envelope from her pocket and handed it to Elizabeth.

“This is for you.”

Elizabeth glanced at the envelope without taking it.

Seeing that Elizabeth didn’t budge, Becky went up to put the envelope in her hand.

It was a thin envelope, and Elizabeth guessed what was inside.

She gripped the envelope with her fingertips, and her heart was sinking continuously.

Elizabeth looked at Becky and smiled, “What does this mean?”

Becky cleared her throat softly with guilt in her eyes. “Elizabeth, you are smart and must know what it means so that I won’t say it bluntly.”

“Really?” Elizabeth seemed to have an obsession and bit her lower lip with her white teeth, “If you don’t say it bluntly, I may not know what it means.”

Hearing this, Becky turned grim.

In fact, she didn’t want to talk about Elizabeth’s pregnancy directly.

Max didn’t know about this yet.

Now that she came to Elizabeth to solve it, she could only hint instead of speaking out.

Becky didn’t trust Elizabeth. What if Elizabeth had a recording device with her? If Elizabeth recorded their conversation and showed it to Max, Beck’s perfect image would collapse instantly.

Becky wouldn’t allow that to happen.

Before she arrived, Becky thought Elizabeth should be easy to deal with.

But now she didn’t think so.

How could Elizabeth get pregnant if she was easy to deal with?

Thinking of this, Becky went up and opened the envelope for Elizabeth.

Both of them saw a check for one million.

Becky said softly, “You have worked very hard in the past two years, ang helped Max a lot inside and outside the company. He also praised you, saying that you are capable and hard-working. I think you have had a hard time since the Blaine family went bankrupt. It’s not much, but it shows my gratitude. Take the money and buy the things you like and nutritious food to recuperate.”

When she mentioned recuperating, Becky gripped Elizabeth’s wrist and gently pressed the latter’s palm with her fingertips.

Elizabeth looked up and met Becky’s eyes.

Becky nodded to Elizabeth and sighed softly as if she was regretting something. She even reached out to pat Elizabeth on the shoulder.

It was evident that she couldn’t say more.

Looking at Becky’s face, Elizabeth suddenly felt irritated.

Max asked her to take a vacation in the office yesterday. He said similar words and asked her to take a good rest.

They seemed to care about her pride and only hinted at it.

Elizabeth’s pink lips quivered.

She thought, “What shall I say? Shall I thank them? Thank them for caring about my health. They ask me to take a vacation and give me money, asking me to take a good rest. Will I let them down if I don’t accept their kindness?”

Elizabeth suddenly felt ridiculous. She had been ambivalent and painful, and they had planned her future.

When Becky saw grief and indignation suddenly appeared in Elizabeth’s eyes and was about to speak, Elizabeth handed back the check.

Didn’t Elizabeth want the check? Why? Becky obviously panicked. “Perhaps you think it’s not enough, but Elizabeth, this is what I can offer you. If you need more, I can…’

“You don’t need to do this.” Elizabeth interrupted her coldly and shook her head. “I

don’t want money.”

Becky froze.

“Don’t you want money?”

Becky wondered, “What does she want? Max?”

A look of ferocity flashed across Becky’s eyes. Her friends were right. Elizabeth had been Mrs. Hart for too long to leave.

Elizabeth shook her head and said affirmatively again, “I don’t want money.”

Before Becky arrived, Elizabeth had made a decision she had never considered.

She would keep the baby.

She would give birth to it and bring it up by herself.

She would not depend on anyone.

The baby was hers and had nothing to do with anyone else.

Since Elizabeth had decided, how could she take Becky’s money?

Elizabeth wouldn’t take Max’s money, let alone Becky’s.

If she took the money from them, she couldn’t get rid of them.

What if Max tried to snatch the baby from her? What if Becky couldn’t tolerate the baby?

Therefore, Elizabeth wouldn’t take the money from Becky or Max.
